KC's REAL DEAL TATTOO CONVENTION!

This weekend (March 9, 10, 11) marks the 5th annual Real Deal Tattoo Convention at The Uptown in Kansas City, MO.

Representing Windhorse at the convention will be Mark Galloway, and our dear friend, Matthew Crim. Matthew visits us from Keepsake in Astoria, OR.

Matthew is also participating in the Reach Beyond Death exhibition here at the Windhorse Gallery. Reach Beyond Death will be OPEN during regular gallery hours this weekend, alongside the Real Deal Convention. Keep an eye out at the convention, for other local tattoo shops and artists we've featured here on the blog.

Real Deal Convention Admission starts at $15 for single day passes, and $30 for 3 day passes.

Windhorse Admission is FREE and there's plenty to see here as well, our show runs through the end of April.

Here are the remaining out of town members to the Reach Beyond Death show. Their submissions are sure to be serious works of art, that reflect as much about the culture around tattoo, as it would about the artists themselves. Each and every artist involved in this show comes from very different backgrounds and disciplines that continuously contribute to the culture and tradition that grows with the expansion of what it means to tattoo, and be tattooed.
Cory Lenherr is an artist based out of Scottsdale AZ.

Phil Holt

Phil lives and works in Tampa FL at a studio called Red Letter 1. He makes small batch pigments for his company OLD GOLD. These are very very fine quality pigments and we can speak from experience, they are well worth the price and wait. There is some amazing things going on in Phil's studio so check it out.

Alan Thompson can be found at the other end of I-70 in St. Louis, at a studio called Trader Bob's. Alan will be attending the 2012 Real Deal Tattoo convention. He's a friend to Windhorse and we urge you to check out Alan's work and come say hello at the convention.

Stu Pfost

Stu is a tight bro from way back when. He's a regular guest at the Mercy Seat here in Kansas City. He knows his way around, and keeps Lexington happy with some great traditional work, and a pink donut here and there. Stu's a true friend to the Windhorse and we are proud to have his work featured in Reach Beyond Death.

Ugly Bill joins Reach Beyond Death

Ugly Bill is the next participating artist in Reach Beyond Death. Tattooing since 1989, Bill began his career as a tattoo artist right here in Kansas City. In 1999, Bill moved to San Diego to pursue tattooing further, and has been living there since.

Ugly Bill also represents Special Technique, a collective of artists and manufacturers of fine Rotary Machines. In a matter of years these mostly handcrafted machines have been making their way into the mitts of artists across the country.

As fans and collectors of these machines, we’re happy to have Ugly Bill as part of this exhibition.

There is a shop in Portland that has some very talented artists, who have opened up their doors to Mark. That shop is Art Work Rebels, located at 510A NW 23rd Ave. Portland. Oregon. 97210. Reach Beyond Death is proud to have such in important person in Tattoo tradition as a part of the Show. Dana Brunson has been tattooing since 1971, and has been in Cincinnati since 1977. His family is fully integrated in the culture as his wife Dot and son Jason are also tattoo artists. Dana, Jason, and Carter Gilliss will all be contributing a piece to the show. If you take some time to look at their site, you'll have a capsule full of history, tradition, and culture that has lasted generations. It is truly an honor to present their work here at Windhorse, especially as a part of Reach Beyond Death.

Matthew Crim once lived and worked in Kansas City, and is now living and working in Astoria, at a shop called Keepsake. He is a great artist and an even better friend to us here at Windhorse. Reach Beyond Death is very fortunate to have him as a member of the show. His versatility is a true gift. From Japanese, to Organica Textural work, to monotonously drawn ballpoint penned jewels, Matthews range spans so many areas. We are sure if you check out his blog, that there is a little something for everyone.

This show is continually getting better with each new addition to the group. Please keep checking in and if you have an interest in getting tattooed by any of these amazing artist, let them know so that they might come and work here for a guest spot. Matthew travels to KC sometimes to work here at Windhorse, if interested please contact us.

Our Friend Ben Radatz from MK12 did a time laps project with Mark. This tattoo is on Ben's friend Lisa who is a great lady and sat like a Champ for the whole session. The subject itself was fun and original, which really helped tie the whole thing together.

Here are some more finished projects that Mark has been meaning to post. Dragons, Sharks, Fighting Mantids, and even some Geometric Black work. There have been some pretty amazing projects here lately, come in and share your project with us.

Had a sweet time for Ashley's opening in September. Thanks to Ashley and her fans for coming out to Windhorse to celebrate with all of us.

This will be the final weekend for Kingdom Is At Hand during normal gallery hours, perhaps we'll see some latecomers before prepping our October show?!

Coming October 7th to Windhorse is Modern Fairy Tales, new work by Gear. A Kansas City native, Gear is a KCAI alumnus, and has been creating artwork for nearly 30 years. His new works reflect politics and religion, creating characters and scenes depicting their societal impact on the world.

Modern Fairy Tales opens at 6pm on October 8th and is open through the month during normal Gallery hours. Hope to see you there!

Many thanks as always from us here at Windhorse, and Mr. Carter Gilliss himself, for a sweet opening for "Oil & Water" on August 5th. Carter made the trek down from Cincinnati to enjoy the opening with all of y'all, so hopefully you caught his face while he was in town. The show is only half a month old, so if you haven't made it out, it's still hanging around for a couple weeks.

We'll soon be gearing up for "The Kingdom Is At Hand" a solo show from KC local, Ashley Lande.
On September 2nd, from 6-9pm, she takes center stage. The show will then be open during normal gallery hours for the month of September.

Just a quick reminder, plenty of awesome skateboards showing at Union Press for the Lovely "Art of Skateboarding" Show. This is a short run, and the show ends on Friday. Most boards are up for silent auction, so if you'd like to place a bet, stop in to The Steel Gallery before the Closing Reception ends on Friday. All boards start at $40. AFFORDABLE ART, people!

Hello Internet! Thanks again for making it out to support Lauren McEntire for the month of May. Her show will run up through the weekend, so if you’ve been curious, now’s the time to jump in!

If you haven’t already heard, June is coming, and with it a new show to Windhorse. Opening reception for SUBJECT is June 3^rd from 6pm-9pm.

Featuring works by Shelby Parks and Gatlin McClun, SUBJECT provides the audience with the intimate human form. While maintaining balance through a central focus, it’s exploration into each artist’s respected medium that creates the variance for a show likely to excite all viewers.

Windhorse would love to thank everyone that could make it out to our May First Friday opening for Lauren McEntire.

Those unfamiliar with McEntire’s work will find someone with surprising control over the sewing machine. Using fabric, old textiles, and paper, she is able to create images by “drawing” with thread.

We would also like to remind those that couldn’t make it out that the show will be on display until the final week of May.
